Press release:

Children in families trying to reconstruct their lives after Hurricane Katrina or other disasters are being provided a comfortable place to sleep by the Little Rock Quaker Meeting and the American Friends Service Committee.

Twenty-five beds were delivered to relief organizations in New Orleans and eight beds have been delivered to hurricane survivors relocated in Arkansas and other families in need referred by the Salvation Army and Red Cross.

The Little Rock Meeting's production facility is located in Arkadelphia. The bunk beds are made there by volunteers from Quaker meetings in Arkansas and from as far as Cooperstown, New York and from students at Hendrix College,  and the Wesley Foundation at Henderson State University.  A number of other individuals have volunteered.

Financial donations for the project have come from Quakers in Arkansas, The American Friends Service Committee, and Quaker meetings from as far as Scotland. Children from the Westtown Friends Meeting sent sheets, pillows, stuffed animals, art work, clogs and other bed items.

Shirl Walter, the project coordinator, has adapted the design for the bunk beds from the Re-Member project on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.  The beds are uniquely constructed in such a way that the components are delivered to the home and assembled there, complete with bedding. For those in temporary housing, the beds can be reassembled so that they can easily  be moved.

The project will continue to take requests both from local agencies and from New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. It has been said that there are 9,000 Katrina hurricane families in central Arkansas, with probably another 3,000 victims from Rita.

Volunteers may contact Shirl Walter at 501-888-2095.  Donations may be sent to the Little Rock Friends Meeting, 3415 W. Markham, Little Rock, AR 72205.

We warmly welcome any assistance from (f)Friends either as meetings or individuals.
